Which frame?

One of the most challenging parts of the framing process is choosing the darn frame. The options are endless. Colours, texture, widths, depths. There is truly no right frame for any piece of art, which is both a blessing and a curse. So how to choose?!

1.

First of all; personal preference. You may hate gold, or have a particular disgust of bare wood. So I would have a think about what you don't like to begin with.

2.

Next, what do you think would suit the artwork or photograph you are framing? Do you want to pick out a colour in the artwork or do you want to make a statement with your frame and have a total contrast?

3.

Think about where the frame is going to be. What's the space like, is it a blank wall, will it be with other frames, is there a particular theme or colour? Or do you want it to stand out in the room; a pop of colour or texture?

4.

So now you have a view on the colour and style of frame, you decide on the width + depth of the frame. There is often a range available; this is going to depend on the size of the frame and your personal preference. When I'm framing for someone, I often provide photos and/or mock-ups of the artwork with the framing samples alongside so clients can get a feel for how the different widths of frame will look once finished.

Once you’ve considered all of these points, you should be closer to making a decision. And finally getting that picture on the wall!
