Wall of the Week

15 January, 2022

My second ever Wall of the Week; a wall in the tapas restaurant Una Más, in Sydney.

So why does this work for me. Firstly I love the use of the same colour and width of frame. Subtle, modern and warm. Grouped like this with the same frame they all have different subject matters but are harmonious as a group, they seem part of the same family.

I love the way all of the paintings blend in to the dreamy tones of the restaurants overall aesthetic. Interestingly although most have an element of a peachy texture they all include darkness, a shadowed or deeper aspect to them, which therefore makes them stand out enough to draw you in.

The texture of all the images appears similar too. Slightly rough and chalky. They are not flat images, they have movement, brush strokes. This similarity suits the feel of the rest of the interior we can see in the overall photo. There’s a casual grace to it all. A sophisticated casual feel of natural tones and textures. A modern comfort and calm. The paintings reflect that with modern takes on natural subjects; the sea, a landscape, the ancient art of pottery.

I’m immediately taken to the woman at the top left and her graceful yet assuming stance. And from there my eyes move down to the bottom right, where the use of a wide mount draws your eye in to the sea.

How about you? Which image draws you in first? It may not be the one you expect.
